View opening remarks by Dr. David Blumenthal and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the 2010 ONC Grantee Meeting.

The 2010 ONC Grantee meeting was opened by David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) who introduced Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Secretary Sebelius welcomed the ONC grantees at the meeting: the ONC Beacon Community Programs, Regional Extension Centers, SHARP, state health information exchanges, and the workforce development program.

The meeting covered many of the issues that the grantees would need to address including: from privacy to security, to marketing, to how to spread health IT into our most rural and remote areas in America.

She emphasized that the HITECH act is about Health care delivered to the right patient -- at the right time, and the right care, which doesn't happen every day in America.

During the remarks, she said: "I spend a lot of time across the country talking to health care professionals, and I have to tell you, I haven't met a single provider who uses a high-quality health record who says, 'Boy, I just wish I could go back to the days where I could write down all that information on paper files, and I really miss it -- I miss those good old days.' Everybody tells me they are a better health care provider because of the records they use."
