Building a Legacy

February rains couldn't dampen the spirit of an enthusiastic crowd gathered Friday, Feb. 22, to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new Greek Village at NC State University.

The Greek Village project is a 10-year, $104 million overhaul of the existing Greek Court. Scheduled improvements include the replacement of all current 1960s-era fraternity and sorority houses in a phased demolition, all new roadways and infrastructure as well as other amenities.

The project is unique in that it will also provide each participating chapter the opportunity to design, build and own its house. The term of the ground lease will be for 40 years, renewable for an additional 40 years, at a cost of $1 per year. The project will include 20 chapter houses and town homes for smaller groups.

Each Greek organization will be responsible for the cost of building and maintaining its new chapter house, while planning and infrastructure costs will be shared between the university and the organizations. Four fraternities have committed to the first phase of the project and two existing houses will be demolished over the summer to make room for Phase I. Additional construction involving infrastructure and new roadways will also be completed during this phase.
