Thank you for this. I shall take your advice. From rushing about in general life I need to learn to slow every down! I am practising on the backwaters of the Thames so far, I need to be adept for the Thames itself as it is very busy.
I am really enjoying the feel of just being on the water with the wildlife but obviously I want to master efficient paddling. Your style has reassured me that I should go with whatever I find comfortable and I can mix the strokes. Thanks again.

Cheers Dr. Joe, I've had my canoe a month now and I am desperately trying to master this. I find I'm doing a mixture of Canadian stroke and the Indian stroke...but I find the J stroke no help at all. I'm obviously doing something wrong. I can't manage to kneel yet as it's murder on me ankles...would I improve if kneeling? any suggestions?
To control the canoe your body must be attached to the boat to transfer the power from your paddle. In that regard kneeling helps lower your center of gravity and will keep you connected to transfer the power of your stroke to the canoe. It will not correct a stroke problem. Slow the stoke down and let the canoe glide, Take it slow to master the strokes and make it fun. It takes some time to develop a feel for where to push and pull the paddle. Later you can speed it up.
