My 40s-50s Playlist for the Younger Family Danikquia Starks PD#1 A Raisin in the Sun Music Project: Ultimate Playlist Danikquia Starks PD#1 Mama Connie Francis-You Always Hurt the Ones You Love: I chose this song for Mama because I think it represents her feelings towards her children Walter and Beneatha. Both of her children aspire to different things in life, things she cannot give them, like Walter's desire to invest in a liquor store. Mama holds herself accountable for all the sadness and pain that comes upon her family, even when it is not her fault. Don Cornell-The Bible Tells Me So: I chose this song for Mama because throughout the play, she often quotes Bible passages and even slaps Beneatha when she claims there is no God. This song well represents Mama because it shows how she sticks to what she knows, regardless of what others tell her, she keeps her faith. Mahalia Jackson-Move On Up A Little Higher: This song represents Mama's hope and aspirations to move up in life, not only for herself, but for her family as well. This song represents all the dreams she and Mr.Younger had, the dreams she always held onto, just like her plant. Walter Judy Garland- Somewhere Over The Rainbow: This song well represents Walter's way of thinking. He spends most of his time dreaming or with his 'head in the clouds'. Walter believes that without hard work all his dreams will simply fall into his lap, similarly to the tone of this song. Duke Ellington- I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues: Like Walter's mood for most of the duration of the play, he is constantly showing how he feels sorry for himself and cannot find a single thing to be jovial about, allowing his mood to affect all the people in his home. Ruth Billie Holiday- I Can't Give You Anything But Love: I chose this song because it best represents Ruth's personality. Though she works hard for her family, cleaning other people's houses, she still does not see it as enough. She does not know what else to give her family, especially Walter, but love. Dean Martin- Return to Me: Throughout the play Ruth shows how she wants nothing more but for Walter to love her the way he used to, to come back to her. Ruth desires a closeness with her husband and happily reconnects with him in the end. Beneatha The Staple Singers- Respect Yourself: I chose this song for Beneatha because I think it best represents her obnoxious personality and how ahead of her time she is. Like the character in the lyrics, Beneatha disrespects her past in regards to her family's religion and her mother's struggle. She belittles others out of defense, yet she does not truly respect herself. The Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby- Don't Fence Me In: Beneatha is a very modern, strong willed woman. She longs to break free of white America and does her best not to assimilate.
