Today a small group of us from CyclingDutchStyle.com.au went to meet two Velonauts near Assen - David Hembrow & Peter Haan.

From there they escorted us to Groningen where we then visited the factory where they make these particular velomobiles. While there we had a go at some recumbent bicycles too - great fun!

  • Nice video!

Shame you didn't go to Dronten ('Velomobile/recumbent 'Mekka' of The Netherlands, probably of the world). 3 Velomobile manufacturers and one of them also importing 2 other models. In total the 3 manufacturers sell: Quest, Strada, Mango, Alleweder (3 versions I think), Orca (fka Versatile), Sunrider, WAW.

Did you by any chance ride through Zwolle?

  • @Quemo304 Yes, we did ride through Zwolle. We did a big loop of the country, starting in Dieren, up to Groningen then across to Amsterdam then down to Utrecht. It was wonderful... and I'll be back. I'm hoping someone will organise a Roll Over Europe tour in velomobiles. I'll come for sure!

  • @nitramluap

Zwolle is my home town. Even though it's not very big (120.000 citizens I think), there are about 10 velonauts in Zwolle.

About the European version of ROAM, check this:

theraceacrosseurope (just google; Youtube won't let me insert a URL, not even cut in parts)

  • @Quemo304 Excellent, although 2012 is too soon for me to organise leave/flights etc. :(

  • did you hire a mango over there, or ship yours over ? either way - im utterly fascinated by the whole enclosed recumbent (velomobile) thing. the areodynamics on my existing roadie are holding me back im sure..!!

  • @landscapecadmonkey No, although that would have been fantastic to do. We met up with David & Peter and they escorted us to the Mango factory where we test rode some Mangos and other recumbents. Great fun! I have my own Mango here in Australia but there is no way I would have sent it to NL for a 2 week holiday.

  • It's bicycle friendly that's for sure. But it is also motorist friendly and public transport friendly - but in equal measures.

In Australia it is motorist friendly.... followed a low way behind by public transport friendly.... and almost cycling hostile. :(

  • Looks like a much more bicycle friendly place then here (Australia).
