The early 80s 3D movies were shot using the field sequential 3D with the poloarized lenses as opposed to the anaglyph 3D(red & Blue lenses). Anaglyph 3D doesn't look as good, because the stuff doesn't come out at you as much. It is a little out from the screen, but much more from the screen and back. Also, with them being color films and not intending to use this system, some color choices for character's clothes or locations would change because they would conflict with the color lenses.
