This is a simple stirling engine which runs on heat, it works by using a thermal heat exchange with a hot and cold side, expanding and contracting air or gas above and below the piston pushes the piston back and forth creating a recipricating motion.
This is little more than a toy but much larger models which work on the same principle but are greatly refined have been built to run using the power of the sun and generate electricity.
To run a stirling engine using the power of the sun a parabolic reflector is usually first choice for home enthusiasts as its easy to make using mylar or sticky mirror sheets on a large satelite dish, also a large magnifying glass or fresnel lens works well but is quite hard to obtain in the UK of any reasonable size, i have a 50" fresnel lens which is ideal.
In the states theres a whole area of desert devoted to stirling generators soaking up the power of the sun and generating zero carbon electricity, they use a similar method as a parabolic reflector except the dish is made from many flat mirrors all reflecting the sun to the same spot, this is known as a archimedes death ray ... cool name.

  • Candle powered... energy converted from wax to motion.

    Not free though.

  • @nanderson1965 Correct! ... But you obviously didn't read the info where i explained how the stirling engine can also be run from the power of the sun using a parabolic reflector or fresnel lens.

  • @HDXLH1200 the heat at the focal piont is free. not the energy from the fire you start

  • @greenbynature That's still not free energy. The sun converts isotopes of hydrogen into heat and light. It's not "free energy" in the correct sense. Free in the fact that it costs you nothing, yes.

  • @HDXLH1200

Magnifying glass + sun = free..

  • Free???

... something is fueling the flame!

  • Nice engine!
