Interesting facts regarding project 705 submarine boats:
1) Max speed of "Alfa" is 41 knots. It is only second to the K-222 submarine of project 661 "Anchar" (NATO Papa class), which set a world record of 44,7 knots.

2) "Alfas" could pursuit any submarine and could broke pursuit from any submarine. They needed only about a minute in order to accelerate to full speed.

3) Speed of this submarine was allowing it to run away even from most torpedoes.

4) The only Nuclear Submarine class with liquid-metal reactor in the World.

  • Most boats only spent 10 yrs in service, for combined total of 70 yrs for the entire class. One boat had a 20 yr life because it spent 9 of it in a repair yard following a reactor accident which spilled two tons of metal alloy leaked into the reactor compartment.

The Alfas were a great technological achievement but they also had problems which were significant at times.

  • @HomercidalOne It is impossible to take any accurate statistical picture out of so few samples. Having only 6 boats, even a single accident will provide a number 1/6.

For example, often people refer to losses of Globalhawks compared to F-16. This is not a correct comparison.

Also, we have not to forget that these were first generations of nuclear subs. They all had their own problems and were not very reliable. US also had troubles with safety of first generation nuclear subs.

  • He forgot the mention all the problems they had with the reactor.

  • @HomercidalOne "In more than 20 years of service, none submarine was lost, and noone had lost their lives. Even in two cases when they had emergency situation with reactors.

  • Thanks for the upload.

But I think it's more of a "titanium alloy" than just "titanium". They spiced it up a bit to sound cooler.

  • 77Km/h !!!!!!!!!!! jesus people , do you now how look 60km/h ON the water(like 150 on the road)that is one fast MF

  • Most beautiful submarine ever made!!!!Finally with subtitles now I can understand her history!!! thanks for this video man!

  • @BitnikGr

True but I did not claim that there were any losses although the first boat was scrapped after cracks in the reactor compartment were discovered. I thought something that affected 1/3 of the entire class was worth mentioning. He went as far to say that problems would occur if the liquid metal was not kept above 125C and that's exactly what happened to one boat. (continued)

  • Wow, a crew that almost entirely consisted of officers? That is incredible. Great upload.

  • Amazing
