  • I am a beginner, I was offered a 3000/ 8000 Japanese stone for a good price. Is 8000 fine enough if I strop afterward or is 12,000 essential??

  • @DamienNeverwinter The 12000 is not esential. However, I think generally, that most people tend to use something inbetweeen the 8 K and the strop. This can be a higher grit stone, or it can be a paste/crox/diamond spray etc.

But for now I would suggest, that you try and strop directly after the 8K, and then shave with it. That will give you an idea of, wether you are good to go, or need something else.

The knife will most likely be sharp enough, but it might feel to rough. Try it out!

  • @mokujingris1 Thank you so much for such an informative reply. I can get the stone within the next week or so so I will let you know.

  • @DamienNeverwinter you are most welcome, I look.forward to hearing from you.

  • Finally after searching youtube and the internet on what I need to do for the care of a straight razor I find this video that is extremely helpful. Thanks mokujingris!

I have been using a cutthroat with replaceable blades for along time now and I am pretty quick and confident with using it. but I have wanted to move onto a straight razor for some time. My mother is sending me my grandfathers straight razors, and I am going to take the advise of your video and use a 8000grt then a 12000grt.

  • Well done mate. Do you use the same slurry stone for the 8 and 12K stones? I think the slurry stones have a rating, do you need certain ones for finer stones? What happened to your right index finger?

  • @residentevil926 going from 8k grit to newspaper(whitch i've never used, but heard ppl use) is a to big step.

I have stones from 1000 to 120000,after 12000 i use 0.5 diamondpaste-0.25 diamondpaste, and finish of whith cromniumoxide-all 3 of them on balsawood-cheap and works gr8,way much cheaper then to buy something like shapton cheramic 20 or 30000 grit, and makes an exelent edge

  • @bennra26008 Try using some News Paper. It has very fine clay and ceramic in it.It would be about a 20 or 3000 girt if it were a stone.
