David Gold, author of After the Absolute and 35 year student of enlightened spiritual teachers, recounts how his first retreat with Andrew Cohen radically transformed his perspective on spirituality - and life.

After 25+ years into a committed spiritual pursuit where enlightenment was the goal at all costs, and life was merely a sideshow, Dave Gold awoke, on retreat with Cohen, to a part of himself that was already free, radically unselfconscious, and passionately engaged in life--
a part himself that he previously assumed was reserved for those who had already "made the trip" into total realization.

David Gold was the founding partner of Gold, Khourey, and Turak and a successful trial lawyer for over 15 years. During his legal career he lived and studied with West Virginia Zen teacher Richard Rose, and his experiences with Rose and the legal profession are chronicled in Golds first book, After the Absolute. In 1993 Gold sold his interest in the law firm and moved to North Carolina to work with the Self Knowledge Symposium (SKS), a cutting-edge spiritual group with chapters at Duke, North Carolina State, and the University of North Carolina. While in North Carolina he co founded a software company, which was sold in 2000, enabling Gold to devote himself full-time to spiritual pursuits.


Gold has taught at major universities, lectured to student and professional groups around the country, hosted weekly radio and television shows, and produced the award-winning documentary film The Prison Sutras. Since meeting spiritual teacher and evolutionary visionary Andrew Cohen in 2001, Gold has become a dedicated student of Cohens teachings, as well as an active participant in Cohens organization, EnlightenNext . Gold founded the EnlightenNext Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he currently resides, teaches Evolutionary Enlightenment courses throughout the United States, and serves on EnlightenNexts Board of Directors as Chair of the Development.

This is such a beautiful transmission of the simplicity and availability of spiritual liberation that is there for someone who brings this level of intention and humility to the relationship with an authentic spiritual teacher. His reflection obviously carries the depth, integrity and wisdom of several decades of the pursuit of truth-- as a student, author, seeker, and finder.

After the Absolute is a TREMENDOUS book. The very best sort of spiritual travelog - up there with 'The Entronauts', 'Mutant Message From Down Under', 'Hardcore Zen', 'Enlightenment Blues' and 'The Empty Mirror'. First class.

I was really disappointed, however, to see that Dave Gold had joined Andrew Cohen's highly questionable organisation...

Mind is not a problem making machine. It is a meaning making machine.

Enlightenment is not an achievement, it is a realization of unity beyond the illusion of separateness.

A man (buddha) realized unity 2500 years ago. Enlightenment is easy. I know little kids who are enlightened.

Many people confuse enlightenment (realization) with mastery (proficiency through practice)

Enlightenment that is not applied to living is worthless.
