Anime isn't just similar to animation, it is animation. It's what the Japanese call animation, but outside of Japan it usually refers to Japanese animation specifically.

Basically the same as the word otaku. The Japanese us it to mean someone who's obessed with just about anything, but outside of Japan it's used to refer to a huge anime fan.
