A process for making homemade plywood for gears in wood gear clocks.

  • The shafts (axils) are piano wire. The main shaft rides inside two holes drilled in the wood frame, which serve as the bearings (no bushings). Some of the other wheels (gears) have brass tube bushings (brass tubing from K&S Engineering – hobby supplies). The Center Wheel is attached to the main shaft with a setscrew, which engages a flat machined into the main shaft. Google “wood gear clocks” and visit Clayton Boyer’s site. Lots of information at the bottom of the page.

  • Inspiring work. can you explain what do you use as a bearing? what exactly is the rod, how do you connect it to the wood? and prevents the wheel from falling when its hanged? thanks a lot.
