Squirrel monkeys are native to the tropical rainforests of South America. They occupy many different types of forests, they usually forage in the medium and lower levels of the forest and sleep close to the canopy. Squirrel monkey groups - or troops - may be made up of as many as 300 individuals. The females are the dominant members of the group.
Squirrel monkeys are very agile; they often run throughout the forest on branches.
Female squirrel monkeys nurse and care for their infants until they are independent. The fathers take no part in raising young.
