This yoga video is designed for those with arthritis in their hips. Osteoarthritis is caused by degeneration of the joints; when the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones wears away, bone rubs against bone. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the synovial lining of the joints causing swelling and stiffness. This yoga video will focus on three main things. Firstly when we are in pain we tend towards shallow breathing. We will focus on deepening your breath so that oxygen can reach the inflamed areas. Secondly, we will focus on increasing the range of motion in the joints. Increasing the range of motion in the joints will help to reduce stiffness and increase synovial fluid. Thirdly we will strengthen and lengthen the surrounding areas. Creating stability and strength in the muscles around the joint provides support for the joint and improved ability to weight bear. Lengthening the muscles and soft tissues around the joints helps to create more space in the actual joints. Please check with your medical doctor and ask what exercises are appropriate for your particular condition and what precautions you should take.
