I can assure you his tail is taken down several times a week, washed, rinsed, rebraided and bagged. It drags the ground by 2 feet or more when it is down and he is being shown.
I'm not trying to tell you how to care for your horse's tail
but my friend had a tail bag o her twh and during the summer while swatting at flies his tail became smashed and tangled *really tangled and they ened up taking almost 2 feet off his tail
if you use cowboy magic or show sheen like once every 2 weeks on his tail and then braid it and then use electrical tape to basically put it in a bun you have wont have to worry about his tail getting knotted or getting smashed.
