Of course, there are some great American actors. Meryl Streep comes to mind. But most of my favorites are British. About the "looks," I think the British actors are every bit as attractive as the American, in spite of the fact that the British ones are less likely to have veneers on their teeth, Botox in their faces, collagen in their lips, nose jobs, breast implants, liposuction, etc.
but for character acting, for comedy, for villainy -- you don't get better than British / Irish actors.

Everyone having a go at the british, lets remember two of the best actors in that show were british Stringer Bell and Mcnulty, it says alot when american directors hhire british actors to play main parts MOTHERFUCKAZZZ!!
