http://www.NaomiAldort.com Every parent would happily give up ever scolding, punishing or threatening if she only knew how to ensure that her toddler/child/teen would thrive and act responsibly without such painful measures. The book, Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort is the answer to this universal wish. It is not about gentle ways to control a child, but about a way of being and of understanding a child so she/he can be the best of herself, not because she fears you, but because she wants to, of her own free will. These are principals based upon love. I was brought up like this (with parenting based upon the ideas of A.S. Neill and Wm. Glasser.) I never had academic or social problems and grew up to be a responsible and loving adult in turn, a good citizen and a kind disposition. It is an absurd notion that striking another person is ever acceptable. How can a child learn to be loving and kind when fear and intimidation are used as discipline? Excellent.
I am not agreeing on what she says .... "the child is right" . Nope the parents are right because they are the mature ones because it's their house because they are the reason the child was born and it still exists . The parents make the rules and the children follow if not.... Well you fuck em up . My parents beat the crap out of me for every dumb thing a did and i did plenty of them . Thanks to that beating now i'm a better person and understand the meaning of respect and discipline .
It tooks me months to read your book because I cried every couple of pages, remembering my own feelings as a child. Thank you for enlightening me, and for helping me connect with my child.
There is always a good reason why children behave the way they do. I am still learning to look far beyond the behavior. We are so conditioned to react to a problem making it hard to problem solve.
I've read the book, and many others that follow the same principles and I can tell you it's only been a very short while and my 16 month old has changed dramatically. It could also be the way I see things have changed, but either way, there is much less problems, more love and understanding.
Nice to see/hear other nationalities also talking about the inadequecy of scolding children as a behavioral regulation or intervention. In Denmark we have Erik Sigsgaard and many others on that issue. Nice! Also, look for Maria Aarts and family (Holland) angle on adult-child relations...
