Although i admire you for making an original fat american joke, the song is from the Depression era. Large mining companies owned the mines. You worked at the mine, lived in company housing, and shopped at the company store because the mining company owned the town. They payed so little that it was easy to go into debt just trying to live, but the company would basically extend 'credit' at the store to workers. you would go into debt with the company.

Boy has this country been messed up for a long time! One of the first popular music songs I ever heard-thanks to my parents. Old Black Magic, Fever, The Candyman, Tom Dooley-songs that have meaning-and still resonate today...

learned this as a child in the late 50's. ALSO, and more importantly, learned that one needed to depend on one's brain, not one's back, to realize success in life. I'm not singular in intellect... tired of excuses.

To all you Kentucky Wildcat fans out there, along with all you Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills fans out there: This was the #1 song in the USA when Art Still came into the world (December 5, 1955).

Wasn't this also at a point where you were paid in company script that could only be redeemed at the company store? That was outlawed later obviously.

Szeretett bátyám kedvenc dala volt. Mindig együtt énekelte az énekessel.. Szinte fülembe cseng a Ő hangja ! Nyugodjon békében.

I read your original post. Your basic argument that the song is not Depression era because Travis recorded his version in '46 and Ford's in '55 is not only wrong, it's stupid. My "irrelevant info" shows the fallacy of your argument. Posts are 500-character limited. It was one reply divided by 3. Davis got screwed by Travis and Ford in a way that was common in the music business. You made an ad hominen attack on me first, and now you're indignant by my response? I'm done. here.
