  • Run! Do not oppose energy that is too strong. The bull fighter keeps sidestepping to attract the bull to charge, but moves out of the way at the last moment. We never use strength against strength. America lost the war in Viet Nam because the people there did not try to stand up to the U.S. They always slipped away, and set traps. Push hands teaches these skills.

  • In Tai Chi, we have two major expressions of energy - long and short. Short energy is meant to send energy into the body, while long is meant to move the body out of the way. Short energy requires exhale, while long energy can be used for pushing. Long energy can be inhale or exhale depending upon the situation.

  • I don't know about weight lifting, but in Tai Chi, one naturally breathes out when punching.

  • As someone who has studied martial arts for many years and has started studying Tai Chi for the past year I find these Tai chi combat applications very unrealistic. Tai Chi is a wonderful way to improve your energy flow and relaxation but as for combat I would not try to use it against a strong committed fast individual who has any idea how to fight.

  • may i ask, how to use the energy in Tai Chi if our enemies are too strong....?

  • Michael. This has always been an complex subject for me to understand. William CC Chen was big on this subject of expanding (Inhaling) under certain power moves that seem to go contrary to the typical exhale when punching techiques. This is an area that could use a good bit of discussion. (hint, hint, winky, wink) hmmm?
