At the time of writing this work feelings of deep sadness and anger were uppermost in my heart and mind. I wrote the work for piano and later developed it for string orchestra. The Lament expresses sorrow for the suffering of all innocent people caught up in war and destruction. Hope is expressed in the coda and reflects a conviction that there are continuing opportunities to restore those conditions which enrich our lives.
