Elkhounds are the most intelligent dogs on Earth. Our Tikka could almost teach Calculus.

@rattinox As to how we became the dominant species, we really aren't. Our moosedogs let us think we are because we have the thumbs and can open the peanut butter and scratch between the shoulder blades.. They are, however, the ones truly in charge. Keep the arfspring happy! ^-^

@5610winston :)) They really are terrifyingly smart. Sometimes our Tikka would just look at me like "how did you loony humans get to be the dominant species??!!"

@rattinox Our Moose has learned to make and use a back-scratcher from her rawhide bones. The vet couldn't understand how she got those hot-spots between her shoulder blades until I explained it.
She's 14 now (I figure Monty's pretty close to the same age), and slowing down, but still willing to discourse on the quantum nature of gravity and Ramanujan's twenty-six dimensional space.

My grandparents gave me a elkhound when I a kid, that dog was my best buddy, I sure miss her....

They are the most versatile breed of dog. From the comments of their people, it looks like they have more breed-loyalty than most other breeds. When I take Moose out, she always gets remarks about her beauty and people ask if she's a husky or a malamute. I could almost let them think that, as I don't want to see them go the way of dalmatians or Saint Bernards or whatever the pop culture breed of the week is. I always set them straight, though.
Scratch your arfsprings' ears for me!

@StiffyIdol That bow is a natural behavior, a signal that means,"come play with me!" With moosedogs, it takes little to get them to play-bow. Or to play-bow-wow.

@pLuMLoCo04 I brush my Moose out and carry a bag of the fur with me when I'm vacuum shopping. I've found that some of the cheaper models work better than the expensive ones. So much for the Oreck challenge. The Dirt Devils seem to work best, but don't last as long. Finally, we just left the hardwood floors bare and wear slippers.

@nestlemarie Thank you! I know I'm kinda biased, but they really are - as are all elkhounds by default! :)

@pLuMLoCo04 They seem very calm! Are they the type of dog to run like a husky? I know people who have had huskies and they have escaped many times! I'm looking to get another dog after 5 years since my last one and was considering an elkhound!! What's your advice?

@nestlemarie Depends on the dog and on the training. 2 of mine have obedience titles (Quinn and Monty). Quinn sticks to me very well. Monty has very selective hearing and may or may not run depending on what else he sees and if it's more interesting than me (pretty much a given) and Toby was a rescue with minimal training and he would run. Generally with elkhounds a fenced yard is a must as is lots of exercise, however, they do also enjoy lots of long snoozes on couches and beds!!

@nestlemarie Oh, and the hair. You'll read lots of really great pluses about elkhounds, but the one overwhelming negative will be the hair. They shed two times a year...for 6 months at a time. :) Seriously...just invest in a good vacuum and also put elkhound tufts out in the spring for birds to use for nesting! It's a win/win/win!
