@bupkes you certainly need to get your facts right before slamming people. What you've seen is only a rare 2-3 cases. I have a maid, my neighbours and many others have too, and we usually allocate our maids a room in the household so they can have their own space. And it isn't called SLAVERY. They don't earn so little $, if you don't know, go read the news!

Majulah Singapura!

@bupkes Slavery & maids are 2 different things. You seem confused. Where did you get the idea that maids sleep under the table, no room or bed. Maids have their own bedroom to themselves. They have handphones, they have friends, they are allowed to have every sunday off, lots of maids dance at orchard Ion every week. I bet you're not Singaporean if you think what you've said is true.

But the practice of slavery is common. They call them "maids" or helpers, young women who work 15 hour days 365 days a year. They sleep under the table in the kitchen--no own room or bed. The first 11 months salary is kept by the agency who recruits them in Indonesia or Phillipines, then they get around $250 dollars a MONTH!!!, then sent home after 13 more months. NO TELEPHONE, NO FRIENDS, NO TIME OFF, and every "owner' talks about the "stupid maids, very bad, dirty, dishonest..."

Singapore is named the 4th best country in the world, among 127 ranked countries, to do business in. Forbes Asia financial magazine saw SG leapfrogging UK, Sweden, Ireland n Finland. SG kept its regional top position as e economy w e best business conditions in the Asia-Pacific. NZ was 5th, Aus 8th, HK9th.
SG attracts entrepreneurs, investors n workers. Business-friendly economies like SG, are in a better position to rebound from the global economic downturn.
