The KATSU PROJECT makes the bridge between 2 cultures and musicians with various backgrounds. Also the instruments are not common to sound together. This new language is born out of an intensice collaboration between the composer Hanne Deneire and the musicians.
Japanese poetry, written by zen-monks just before they died, are the inspiration of new musical compositions. The instruments are 2 taiko players, cello, flute/shakuhachi & soprano.
Katsu is the expression Japanese Monks use when they are liberated just before they die, the moment they see the light. Katsu is also the title of the composition of Hanne Deneire that was the starting point for the musical aspect of this project. This trio was composed for the Festival of Flanders in 2001 and is about the transition between life and dead, the filisophy of a boeddhist.
The unique character of this performance lies in the instrumentation and the combination of the Japanes and the Western culture. It gives the audience a very special experience with its new exciting sound.
