one can also take a knife or other sturdy thin utensil and whack the edges of the lid to make scores on the corners of the top part of the lid. it helps to break the vacuum seal, and add a bit more traction. that's always been my method, considering i don't own rubber gloves

here is the scientific method. Hold the jar in one hand
then push the side of the lid till you hear a pop sound
then turn it. Its an amazing thing I seen on mythbusters
