Analogies/Sympathies began as an attempt to contrive various analogies (whether figural, physical, notational or otherwise) and create illusory orchestrational resonance as a means to show how these resemblances (and how musical resemblances in general) inform my listening experience. Fundamentally, I was curious about the musical distinction between allusion and illusion and how terrifyingly similar these seem to be in certain musical contexts----terrifying (to me) because of the amount of self-deception required to give certain musical objects an identity that is singular, despite its tendency to be swallowed up by a higher order resemblance. Really though the piece is probably just a failed analogy to these sorts of processes in everyday cognition----processes that encourage us to eschew sincerity and fear diversity.

Phil Garrett- Viola
Jamie Murphy- Flute
Katherine Denler- Harp
Andy Miller- Marimba and Bass Drum
