When that checkered flag fell on October 5, 2008, I breathed a sigh of relief. "There," I said, "now NASCAR will finally have to get rid of that ridiculous yellow line rule. There's no way they're gonna take that win away from Regan Smith. Needless to say, I was stunned by NASCAR's call.
Unfortunately, the 2008 Amp Energy 500 is in the record books and, as Smith selflessly lamented, his trophy is not with the others at Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing. Some will say that such controversy should be left in the past, that stirring up the emotions of that day will only do harm to this sport. But to me, an event of this magnitude that had such dramatic and immediate consequences to a driver and team that needed a win so desperately, would hurt NASCAR more in the long run. We cannot let that happen.
I say this not to stir anger, but to offer a solution to those of you affected by that call. Anger at NASCAR is not the answer, for they have also given us a way to right this wrong: the 2009 All-Star Fan Vote. If enough of us vote Regan Smith into this year's race, it won't give him that win at Talladega, but it will give him the reward he earned that day. It is time to send a message in one voice who really won that day and tell NASCAR the yellow line rule has gotten out of hand. It is time that we turn that passion, all those feelings from last fall, to this positive end, so we can all move forward.
I humbly implore you all, even those of you who agreed with the finish: please join me in voting "Sleek and Swift" Regan Smith into the 25th NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

**UPDATE 2: Gee whiz, folks, looks like those of us in the Regan Revolution aren't the only ones who think the yellow line rule has gotten out of hand:

this was NASCAR's fault all-in-all because they altered the rule in 2007 by allowing last-laps. If i was in the #01, I woulda wrecked his ass and laughed at him while kissing that Miss Sprint Cup.
