How sweet it was. A sold-out Aloha Stadium. 18th ranked Brigham Young University led by Heisman candidate Ty Detmer. Could it happen? Or would this be another painful defeat.
It's been called a "Triumphant Thrashing". UH head coach Bob Wagner said that the 1989 win over BYU was: "the most perfect game, execution-wise, that I've ever been involved with."
Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of that game was a short screen pass from Gabriel to Farmer for a huge gain and score. Farmer was surrounded by a wall of green blockers escorting him untouched into the end zone.
Words cannot describe, you have to watch the video and listen to the emotion in the voices of Jim Leahey and Rick Blangiardi.
yeah but hawaii has a good team with great players and head coaches each year. all were great except von apen. byu was good because of a local guy named norm chow. sucks he didn't get the head coach position after all the work he did. if hawaii could recruit good players, they would be a top team. but would the ncaa recognize hawaii as a top team? i doublt it. they are so full of it.

@hiazn69 oh and detmer was good and won the heisman. there were many who didn't agree with it but he won because byu was a top team. even when byu won the national championship many didn't agree. the following year the ncaa came out with something else. but at least we were national champions and have one heisman trophy winner. i hate to say but ncaa take uh cheap. brennan was good but you think they would give any outstanding player from uh the heisman trophy? they won't and it sucks.

And von apen should NEVER have been hired! Now you know why Hawaii will never be a top ten team.

@boywaimea ?? People don't realize what a disadvantage Hawaii has recruiting players. Just premature to award Detmer the Heisman earlier that day!

byu is not invulnerable. they lose too. at least they didn't lose all their games like with fred von apen. that was shameful. byu recruits hawaii players. but so do the rest of the colleges. byu also has their own rival, utah, not hawaii. so count your wins
