@johnifly I wondered what they were. I was thinking "They're too dark to be painted lady caterpillars" because I have some and they're not that dark at this point, when one of them has already started hanging upside down. I don't think they're lady bugs because I have those too and they have yellow spots on them. I think they look more bug shaped than caterpillar shaped. But then I guess we could be mistaken.

After looking at this again, they DEFINITELY look like some variety of lady bug nymph. They are NOT caterpillars!

They DEFINITELY are NOT caterpillars. They appear to me to be ladybug nymphs. If not ladybugs, they are some sort of beetle nymphs.

Actually they appear to be insect nymphs. The "nymph" stage is usually the stage before the "adult" in an incomplete (three-state)metamophisis.
