Does anyone know what one of these cost brand new in the 50's? My Mom had one, kept it in the basement of our home in Garwood NJ. We lived 1/2 block from the little league field. The ironrite was kept on one side of the basement along with the washer and dryer, furnace, large standing toolbox that my grandfather made ( he was from Poland ) and a kitchen table, the kind they reproduce nowadays and call "deco"and a large oak cabinet for storing the things she and her friends jarred.Different world

My mom used one of these for years too - she was the 007 of ironrites!! could whip out dad's shirts in no time.

@ortcutt : I bought an ironrite, like new, in the 80's at a garage sale for $50. The lady selling it had used it weekly since the 50's. Her husband had detailed records of when he serviced this machine over the years in the back of the manual, which was tucked inside the leg of machine. Oil changes and everything. Still works like a charm, and I use it all the time ironing my cotton sheets.

I just got a ironrite model 85 just given to me!!! The heating element is not working though I don't think parts are available anymore for these beasts. I think mine is a little older then yours.I think it was from 1950!

I grew-up watching my mother iron everything on her "mangle", which happens to be the very same model as shown in this video. About 10 years ago, while my mother was in an advanced stage of Alzheimers, I asked her to see if she could show me how to iron a shirt. At that time she didn't know my name nor could she carry on a simple conversation, (cont. below)
My mother has this model of mangle and still uses it weekly. It's much faster than using a hand iron. Perfectly pressed clothes with this thing.

That's what I've been hearing. I actually found this ironer in someone's trash, next to the roadside! I grabbed it and put it on ebay and sold it for $100!

"(cont.) , but she could iron a shirt like you wouldn't beleive. She had the perfect sequencing of using the two knee levers and turning the shirt to the appropriate angles throughout the process. The shirt came out perfect, but she sat there not realizing her feat. Bizarre stuff. Oh how I wish that I video taped that procedure. I have made numerous attempts to iron a shirt with the mangle, all without success. So if anyone knows how to iron a shirt, please post a video of that. "

Very interesting story-- thanks for re-posting! It's also amazing how the mind can work.

Gosh, I wish I could get mine going again! It needs a complete overhaul and has been in our basement for years! My mother used it and taught me how to do just about everything on it. I can ge a mean center crease inpants and iron shirts like they came from the professional laundry. The knee pedals are to control the roller. One to start and stop the roller, the other to lift it.

Would you believe I found this thing sitting along the side of the street, in someone's trash??? We grabbed it, and put it on ebay and sold it for $100! You can find these on ebay every once in a while, or on craigslist. Put an ad in craigslist. No doubt someone near you has one in the basement they've forgotten about, and would love to sell it for $100 or less, for some Christmas spending money (or gas money!).
