what started out as a quiet little piano and vocal cover of this under-appreciated gem from 1985 quickly became a monster - with unusual (for me) instrumentation and layers and layers of harmonies. Strangely enough, no bass line, as I liked the way it floated without one. This is as far away as I have ever taken a cover from the blueprint of the original, and yet, no chords were changed, and all the keyboard parts from the original are still in there somewhere. The song's lyrics are great, and Aimee Mann matured quickly from this, her first single, to the fantastic songwriter she is today. Going to Berklee in the late 80s, Aimee was an inspiration, as her band and she met at the school, right in Boston. The video, admittedly, has NOTHING to do with the lyric, but it was an exercise in Macro photography, and a chance to not shoot my face constantly as I often do when slapping these things together. My dog makes an appearance or two as well! It took a LOT of work! Hope you like!
Lyrics:
I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
but I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
to tear him away
when I tell him that I'm falling in love
why does he say
Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
I try so hard not to get upset
because I know all the trouble I'll get
oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
and something to fear
and I try so hard to keep it inside
so no one can hear
Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
He wants me
but only part of the time
He wants me
if he can keep me in line
Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
hush hush, darling, she might overhear
oh, no-voices carry
he said shut up he said shut up
oh God can't you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk
Quite enjoyable tbh. Interesting take on an amazing song.
