My theory is that when Michael reminded Nick of home, there's a possibility that Nick secretly loathed himself (for various reasons, one of which being that he actually knocked up John Savage's bride and the guilt was unbearable, that and he felt a complete loss of innocence during the war); so Nick takes the "one shot" and ends it all. But that's just me.
