When I was a kid, we had a great series on TV called Curry on Ice. John Curry coached a group of skaters throughout the series. Here he shows them what Artistry is all about - by showing them Janet's beautiful Afternoon of a Faun exhibitions from 1971 Worlds in Lyon, France.

Many thanks to quillerpen for sending me the DVD!

  • For JOHN CURRY to call her the greatest artistic skater EVER is the highest complement any figure skater could receive.

  • @Chutson353 couldn't agree more. No other lady skater has had the ability to interpret music through skating the way Janet could. Not Fleming, Witt, Hamill, Kwan, Kim.....all amazing skaters in their own right but not a patch on this.

  • Is the boy watching at about 1.21 Neil Wilson, the British Champion from the mid nineties? It certainly looks a lot like him!

  • You're right it's Neil!

  • I agree. There's just SOMETHING about Janet. And when everyone else feels the same, you know she just had It. Whatever it is, you can't take your eyes off of her. She skates with her whole body. Just beautiful and delicious

  • @floskate I think I have to watch more from her. Because this, although surely musical, is just too simple for me choreographywise.

  • @floskate Janet is very beautiful, but I would have to say Yuka Sato has the same or even better quality on the ice

  • @floskate What Olympics was Neil in?What is he doing now?

  • @skatesindreams You don't really see the reaction of the audience.I wish we could see more of the clapping after the skate.

  • Is that a triple flip at the 2:47 mark?I bet the audience loved that skate.

  • This is one of the greatest exhibitions ever skated, To have John Curry's commentary - with his evident respect and admiration for her - added to it is a special joy.

Janet was one of the first women to regularly attempt triple jumps in her programs. However, her emphasis was always on bringing beauty, grace, perfection and joy to the ice.

Her special, magical gift resonates, even now, Through videos such as this, that will continue to be appreciated for years to come.
