VICTORIA - There is killer heroin on the streets of British Columbia, far more potent than users expect when they shoot up.
The number of heroin deaths doubled in the first four months of this year. 21 people have died in B.C since January first, five on Vancouver Island.
That has the coroners service, police, and outreach workers trying to get the word out on the street before another user overdoses.
The Coroner says the number of deaths could climb once it receives toxic screens from cases still under investigation.
Police believe the increase is deaths is due to change in the way heroin is being sold. They say it is normally cut with other products.
Those occasions when it's not is where addicts can easily overdose.
