Notre Dame mounts a drive late in the 3rd quarter that spills into the 4th quarter. A FG attempt by Joe Azzaro is good, tying the game at 10-10. This clip is from the original TV broadcast, with Chris Schenkel & Bud Wilkinson handling the call.
I watched the game - it was on nationally but the eastern half of the country saw it on tape delay - I was 13
my Dad had played golf that day and came to my grandmother's house where U was watching the game - he had listened on the radio and asked if I wanted to know the score - I said yes - I could not believe it ended in a tie - what a letdown
Joe said that this game wasn't on national TV. Each team was allowed on national television three times over a two-year span. Can you imagine such a thing today? ESPN would be down to one channel again.
I was 9 years old and watched this game unfold. I wish somebody had a link to a video of the Ara"The Tie" Parshegan interview while still on the field. It's like Notre Dame Alum have traveled the world ever since, buying up every strip of film that included his comments. From my own recollection he said, There was no way I was going to lose this game for those kids out there. GOOD LUCK ! It's been scrubbed from all the annals of history much like Moses' name from all the public monuments.
The great Chris Schenkel on the call...maybe the most anticipated and dramatic college game on TV up to that time. People talked about little else in sports the week beforehand.
Sounded like Bud Wilkinson getting in a word at the end.
Western Pa. player coming through in the clutch, as usual.

I am, at this very moment, sitting next to Joe Azzaro, who kicked the field goal. Said it was his 21st birthday. Memories ...
