The character name is a play off "Murphy Brown", the eponymous TV news reporter portrayed by Candice Bergen in a fairly successful sitcom from the 80s and 90s. I could be wrong, but it sounds like Bergen also provided her voice to the Murphy Brownbag puppet.
It's less about subliminal messages and more about trying to appeal to both kids and their parents. It's a goal that seems to be lost on many children's TV shows these days.
