A4 Union of South Africa runs alongside the M5 in Devon, faster than any steam train since 1965 not much short of the magic figure. This was a return journey of a steam railtour in Jan./Feb 1995 what a mind blowing experience WOW !!!

  • I suggest zelo1954 you check Google Earth between Hele crossing and Tiverton parkway station. Time the video. Check the straight line distance using the Radius Ring app. & allow the fact the line diverges away and calculate. I stated that USA reached 96 on the downgrade prior to Tiv. Pkw. The car speedo showing more due to top end error as is usual with most cars.

  • To zelo 1954, you are absolutely RIGHT we are all liars who are aware of this run. At least we have other things to do than nitpick , I would suggest you would be good in your place, unfortunately they aint dug it for you yet.

  • I've had a go at calculating this and I cannot get more than about 75mph for 60009. Very roughly I'm getting 19 seconds for 100 revolutions of the driving wheels. We know the diameter is 80 inches and circumference therefore 80 x pi. Speed in mph therefore is 80 x pi x 100 x 3600 / 19 x 12 x 5280 = about 75. This of course in no way detracts from the video and I stand by my earlier comments.

  • @zelo1954 If you wish to be so pedantic or suggest what is said/shown is incorreect why dont you get in touch with ML66B who said he new two of the footplate staff on board at the time . this would then confirm the truth or endorse your glib suggestions . I have no need to exaggerate or falsify any statements made, nor have I.

  • Id say 95/100 and we all know an A4 Can Fly

  • Top marks for a top video!

I'm not going to enter the speed debate except to say the crew were sure as hell letting her 'have her head'. I'd guess it was somewhat over 75 mph towards the end of the video but the bottom line is that none of us can accurately tell what pace she was doing. The crew would know but I bet their not telling!!

    Thanks again for the video.

  • I don't care how fast it goes! What an epic ride, wish I had been along!

Congratulations on a great video, and thanks for sharing!

  • This might solve everyone's problems, if someone could figure out how long the white lines are, then the speed could be more accurately measured

  • Hey you lot, chill out,75 mph/100mph, does it really matter? the streaks can better that given the right track,ENJOY THE MOMENT, Jeez GET A LIFE

  • @zelo1954: As stated you are being obsessive here and from my vantage in a none too healthful way. Further, you've set yourself up as THE authority. I do not accept that. The onus here is not mine. To the contrary, it is you who MUST rebuke the numerous witnesses on and about this fun run; which to all appearances is for you personally, a nuclear melt-down equivalency. No one has to prove anything to you. Again you are the contrarian. Go ahead knock yourself out, you're already semi-conscious.

  • @beeman37 Tell me whereabouts on the video you allege this to have occurred. Give me start and end times.

  • @paullubliner Perhaps they did. All you have to do is show me the evidence.
