Mo 'Nique, who took home the Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, paid tribute to Hattie McDaniel, who won that same award for her role in the 1939 classic "Gone With the Wind." McDaniel was the first black actress to have been given the honor.60 years ago.

  • @SouLoveReal was that because of the racial segregation at the time? wow america's come a long way

  • Hattie McDaniel had to sit in the kitchen of the theatre where the 1940 Academy Awards were held, then came to the state to receiver her award, and then had to be escorted back to the kitchen. She was not allowed to sit in the auditorium (seats) of the theatre among her collegues (actors, directors, etc).

  • She can say "Oscar" -- with the SK sound -- but she seems to have trouble with the word "aKs." Notice she doesn't pronounce "Oscar" as "Ocsar."

  • Rarely has an Oscar been awarded so deservedly.
