In a very unusual way.....a song from the 1982 Broadway musical NINE
which Barbra Streisand included in the 2006 LIVE IN CONCERT tour.
Over the years, when asked about her high school years at Erasmus Hall
High School on Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, Barbra has stated that she was
friendly with Chess maven Bobby Fischer, already a champion at 15. and
"that she had a crush on him".
Barbra graduated from Erasmus hall High School in January 1959, so we
can assume she was a friend of Bobby Fischer around 1957-1958.
We may know more if one day Barbra Streisand will publish her
autobiography.
The song UNUSUAL WAY is from the 1982 Broadway musical NINE, with
words and lyrics by MAURY YESTON.

Bobby Fischer: World Chess Champion
1943-2008

"In May 1949, the six-year-old Fischer learned how to play chess from instructions found in a chess set that his sister had bought at a candy store below their Brooklyn apartment. He saw his first chess book a month later. For over a year he played chess on his own. At age seven, he joined the Brooklyn Chess Club and was taught by its president, Carmine Nigro.

Bobby Fischer attended Erasmus Hall High School together with Barbra Streisand, though he later dropped out in 1959 when he turned 16. Many teachers remembered him as difficult. When his chess feats mounted, the student council of Erasmus Hall awarded him a gold medal for his chess achievements."

NINE ( Broadway Musical)
This song was used in the scene between Guido Contini
and Claudia.

Lyrics:

In a very unusual way one time I needed you.
In a very unusual way you were my friend.
Maybe it lasted a day, maybe it lasted an hour.
But, somehow it will never end.

In a very unusual way I think I'm in love with you.
In a very unusual way I want to cry.
Something inside me goes weak,
Something inside me surrenders.
And you're the reason why,
You're the reason why

You don't know what you do to me,
You don't have a clue.
You can't tell what its like to be me looking at you.
It scares me so, that I can hardly speak.

In a very unusual way, I owe what I am to you.
Though at times it appears I won't stay, I never go.
Special to me in my life,
Since the first day that I met you.
How could I ever forget you,
Once you had touched my soul?
In a very unusual way,
You've made me whole.

BOBBY FISCHER:
In July 1956 he won the Junior Chess Championship—the youngest to ever do so. A year later he won both the U.S. Junior championship for a second consecutive year and the U.S. Open Championship in Cleveland (on tie-breaking points). And a few months later, in January of 1958, he won the U.S. Championship title. He was three months shy of his fifteenth birthday. The chess world hummed with talk of Fischer. Was he an authentic genius? A reporter asked Bobby if he considered himself the best chess player in the U.S. He replied, No, one tournament doesnt mean that much.

He was attracting headlines and becoming increasingly famous. He appeared on the television program Ive Got a Secret. (His secret was that he was the U.S. Chess Champion.) He wrote a regular column on chess for Boys Life magazine. In one article he gave four tips on playing chess: 1, Concentrate; 2, Think ahead; 3, Learn from losing; 4, Study.

Back at Brooklyns Erasmus Hall High School, several of his classmates addressed him as Master, Master Fischer. Barbara Streisand was a classmate. A fellow student reported that Fischer would take out his pocket chess set and play over some games during class. When he was caught he would put the set away and stare into space in silence. His Geometry teacher remembers him as both a poor student and as antisocial. A teacher from the counseling office said: Bobbys I.Q. was in the 180s. But he had no interest in schoolwork. Apparently the only reading he pursued other than his chess material was comic books. Shortly after the required minimum age of 16, he left high school.".

Barbra Streisand introducing the song UNUSUAL WAY at
her 2006 concert:
" This is a new song for me, I love it though,
and its about those kinds of relationships
that are not easily defined, if you know what I mean."

  • i love her!!!!!!!! shi's GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She sort of goes inside a song, lights a candle, and this is what comes out. I've always felt her extraordinary sensitivity was born in her very difficult childhood. I only with that kind of suffering and survival does this kind of understanding come and translate into how she presents her music to the world.

  • awesome!!!!

  • @42McCool I hope you know she graduated in the top of her class.

  • God, how divine!!!!!! I really don't like Nicole Kidman's version. I have nothing against her, she just doesn't have the voice to sing this. But Barbra, oh my... NOW, THAT'S A VOICE AND WHAT A VOICE... Love her!
