This is clearer now. Peter realizes he almost lost control at Kilnashee. He does what a young curate should do: seek guidance from his parish priest and accept it. He's frightened, though, and feels threatened when he sees Fr. Mac is aware of his struggle. And Fr. Mac has an agenda: to separate Peter from Assumpta. Peter wants to protect himself & Assumpta, as he did with Jenny. But he's absorbed by his own struggle and doesn't realize it will drive Assumpta to make and act on her own decision.

Peter is miserable about going on retreat, but his vow of obedience requires him to seek guidance from Fr. Mac and accept it without question. It never occurs to him that Assumpta will take such drastic action with Leo. He's scared and confused when she walks out in tears, but there's no going back from the retreat commitment. The shock sets in, of course, when he returns after the retreat (later clip).

Sitting on the fence? About what? Their relationship going further? Was this scene after the scene where Father Peter tells Assumpta he is a priest and she responds,"Then be a priest"? Sorry, I am confused about the timeline in which this scene happens.
