The big picture is spelled out for all here. The alien invaders have landed at twelve different locations around the world and begun laying waste to everyone and everything in their path. The militaries of the world have been mobilized for war. The Aliens have come looking for a fight and they're gonna get one. The US Military moves to establish lines of defense in Boston on the East Coast and Los Angeles on the West Coast. The military has determined that Los Angeles is somehow key to the invaders plan. So long as we hold control of Los Angeles we have a chance. Meanwhile, Matt and Jed Eckert have fled with what few of their friends the could rescue from the attack on the school and headed into the mountains to escape the onslaught.

Got ask how does Final Count Down come into play? And did you use that Megiddo footage I suggested?

@lastswordfighter No, I didn't use the Megiddo footage. the bit from Final Countdown was actually necessary. I needed a breaker between the news broadcast and the footage of the marines flying over the city and the FCD footage just seemed to fit to me.
