Note: This video shows off the artificial intelligence of the dinosaurs in the exhibit. The video was "shot" like a wildlife documentary in that all of the behaviors were observed, they occurred in real-time with no foreknowledge on our part of the events - I just had to rush and get the camera into as good a position as I could to record the events. Afterwards, like a wildlife documentary, we assessed the footage captured and edited it together to "tell the story".

Be the Dinosaur allows museum visitors to do what they have always wanted to do - to "become" dinosaurs. Taking control of a digital animal in a detailed simulated ecosystem replete with wind currents that circulate odors, plant life with different nutritional values, artificially intelligent dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles and birds, etc..

Visitors need to learn what a dinosaur would have known by instinct - knowledge about the environment, where to find food, what foods are better than others, how to defend or hunt, etc. in order to survive the virtual cretaceous.

Take control of your virtual dinosaur and decide for yourself: were tyrannosaurs hunters, scavengers or both? Did they hunt in packs or as solitary creatures? How would terrain impact an animal's lifestyle? Try the behaviors for yourself and decide!

  • Very good, but I do have one problem with it; modern studies into the T-Rex have revelaed evidence it was a scavanger, not a direct predator. Only rarely would it consider getting it's own food, rather then scavagne it off other kills.

  • Thanks for the comment. It is not exactly true that studies have shown that T. rex was only a scavenger. This is a matter of scientific debate with evidence both for and against. Scientists have different views on the animal. If you visit the Be the Dinosaur exhibit you will see the evidence for both sides of this issue and be able to try out the behaviors and decide for yourself. Also try the book Dinosaurs: The Most Complete Up-to-Date Encylopedia by one of our advisors, Dr. Tom Holtz.

  • Do you know how succesful this would be as a game you could buy?

There aren't many games out there where you're able to play as a dinosaur.

In the game by Valve "Left 4 Dead" you have the ability to play as a giant muscular zombie that can throw cars.

I would LOVE to stomp around as a T-Rex on my computer.

  • Why isn't there already games where you can play as the dinosaur (Dino Simulator)

    It frustrates me!

  • @AmberwiseTheWise I dont think its true, i think the scientists are complete dumbasses, just because it had a skelatal structure similar to a bird doesnt meen its a scavenger, if you have looked throughout history, you would see the scavengers are very small, the T-rex is not a scavenger, it size is the proof of that.
