Learn the difference between the violin and fiddle in this video tutorial! The violin and fiddle are exactly the same instrument that only differ in the way that you play them. Many people ask the question what is the difference between the violin vs fiddle, and there are a few things different associated with the setup of each instrument. Normally a fiddle bridge is setup lower than a violin bridge being that fiddle music has a lot more chords associated with it that with a lower bridge makes it easier to hit 2 strings at once. Also you will see a pickup often on a fiddle which allows you to play into a amplifier, where as violin music is almost always played acoustically.

There are many differences in styles regarding the violin vs fiddle. You will find slide techniques associated with the fiddle, and more vibrato associated with the violin. Also there is the technique of shifting associated with violin music that is not as much seen in fiddle music.

The violin and fiddle are both beautiful instruments that are fun to learn! You can learn more differences between the violin versus fiddle on our website at Violin Tutor Pro!

  • The difference between a violin and fiddle:

    A violin has "strings"

    A fiddle has "strangs"

  • The video was very informational, many people do confuse the violin and fiddle as different instruments although they are not. Great representation of the different style of music!

  • my school is pretty much made out of ducktape so it doesnt matter lol

  • I always had that question lingering in my head, but now I truly know! Oh, with the duct tape...idk lol...

  • Awesome video! I would love to learn how to play, but I have never seen a left handed violin, and I don't want to learn right handed, as I already play guitar and bass lefty. :(

  • I always say that you tune a violin from the highest sounding string to lowest E A D G, and you tune a fiddle from the lowest to highest string G D A E. Routinely, the know it all that asks the question turns to a partner and says "see, I told you, they tune it differently". It is rare that any one gets the joke, most give an expression of deep thought and thank me for the info :-)

  • I would just add to this by saying that some fiddle players will use a flatter bridge than clasical volinists. This makes the strings a few mm closer to the same height. NOT the same height as you would see in a guitar mind you. The flatter (not flat) bridge makes double stops easier as well as makes tripple stops possible. This also reduces the range of motion the arm needs as well. Again, this comes to better adapt the instrument to the style of playing. But yes, they are the same.

  • Fiddle's also can play Celtique music.

  • I have been working with this problem for some time. Can't go into the story it will take too long. But with Irish and Scotish music the difference is very much in the bowing. There are peopleII know who were classically trained who would love to play fiddle but the bowing is completely the opposite to what they were taught classically. But it seems to me that the best way is to get classical training first and then swap to fiddle style.

  • is the playing technique the same, other then speed and all those obvious things?
