Earlier today around 10:00 am, we assisted our neighbors at Banks Fire District #13 when they responded to find an adult Blacktail doe deer stuck on a frozen pond off NW Hoffer Road in the Banks Fire District. When crews arrived the deer was calmly resting in a hole on the ice in water that the property owner advised us was approximately six feet deep. Initially the rescue plan was to float across the ice on a floating rescue board but this caused the deer to become visibly scared so firefighters from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue deployed their Rescue Boat into the water to effect a quicker rescue operation. Rescuers used the boat to break the one inch thick ice in front of the deer and then moved the boat in such a fashion as to enable the deer to follow the broken ice path that the rescue boat created. In less than three minutes, the deer was able to use the open water in this cleared broken ice channel and swim on her own power to the bank where she rested for a few minutes and then calmly walked up the timbered hillside and disappeared into the forest that surrounds the pond.
