New Song Vlog: Orphans
I recorded this video a few days ago, actually - on Thursday to be exact - but I haven't had the time to upload it yet. Yes, the video was shot in a very poorly lit basement. I used a bit of color correction, but I'm not much of a video tech guy Any volunteers?
So again, this video was a few days late, but I hope to post a new song for you again this coming Thursday, as scheduled, if I can.
"Orphans" is a story-song about an orphan who grows up and, thankfully, makes it through the system. Even if he fell through the cracks in some ways, he doesn't look back on his years in an orphanage with contempt or bitterness. He tries to live life well, knowing that the past is a part of who we are today. Here are the lyrics:
ORPHANS
By: Jay Mathes
We were orphans together
Combined our age was no more than nineteen
We all said friends forever
We spit and shook hands on the graves of our mothers
"Jesus saves the sinner"
Words traced upon the wall
Scarlet are these letters
Yet no task is too tall
Through the halls each worker came
Leaving just as fast
Til in walked a lady who called herself "here to stay"
What an irony that she had to go
Beds in rows made neatly
Hide the system's flaws
Parents never greet me
Lost to all but God
Yet one thing I still recall
Something said by Mom:
"Nursery songs don't lie at all.
Sing this when I'm gone:"
"Each new day
Starts a bright and happy morning
Every face
Has a hope for every sun
And the rains are here to remind us all
That we are still alive
We all want for our children
Richer, fuller lives
We all want for our children
Richer, fuller lives
We all want for our children
Richer, fuller lives"
