The eagerly awaited trip to Cornwall with 5029 Nunney Castle had been every Great Western enthusiast's dream. It had been 6 years since a Castle had been last seen over the Devon Banks and in Cornwall for 8 years.

Following last years disappointment, 5029 was finally able to haul The Cornishman from Bristol all the way down to Par in Cornwall and back. Nunney Castle was to put on a fine show with a few near close calls on the run.

Starting off at the top of Whiteball Tunnel the Castle can be seen volcanically erupting the 1 in 80 climb into the tunnel in a fine 'MGM style' hauling 8 coaches in total, a fair load considering the very steep gradients she would face the whole run.
Next scene goes to the Royal Albert Bridge on the Plymouth side, where a regatta is taking place. Nunney Castle crosses Brunel's magnificent bridge into Cornwall 8 years since it last crossed it. This will probably be my last shot I will take of steam crossing the bridge having got it to death now.

On the return working 5029 passes Liskeard station where all the semaphore signals and signal box still remain and continue to be used. For some reason if you listen carefully you'l hear the sound seems to be picked up at either end of the speakers, hopefully the microphone isn't broken! At Combefishacre the roar of a 4-cylinder Castle can be heard in fine form as she tackles and makes it to the final stretches of Dainton Tunnel. The last scene captures the Castles departure from Exeter at Woodrow Barton during the dusk hours, in my view I have to see it as the perfect ending shots to the film mainly due to the evening twilight as well as the nice white exaust from the engine plus noticing the reflection on the river.

Now Tyseley is there gunna be a time when 5043 challenges the Devon banks? Or into Cornwall aswell?

I've noticed a minority of people seem to have a hitch with my films. I understand the differences between liking and loathing which is understandable. So you can dislike if you want but just remember of all the effort and all the heck of miles it takes to get some of these shots. Appreciation is whats needed.

  • Such a high standard - quality stuff as usual. Did enjoy - thanks.

  • @pelforthpelforth much oblidged sir

  • Superb performance from man and machine Ry, Fantastic shots, and as always you get to the best locations to get such magnificent footage that we all enjoy.....and I enjoyed every single minute of it...Bob

  • @robmasterman Thank you for full appreciation Bob, it took some planning out to get to these locations. I have to say this run has most likely been Nunney's best run yet.

  • Hi Ryan: another set of superb clips at well chosen locations. Joining the debate on your regular dislikers: you should actually take these as veiled praise, otherwise known as jealousy, which often accompanies talent in all walks of life. Since we first met you as a wet and cold youth at Churston, you have become one of the best rail filmers on the web. Keep it up. Alan & Margaret

  • @Steamclips I understand now its just I decided to send out a message them tossers by saying how much effort, cost and ambition it takes to get some of these shots we die to get. But for now on I'm just gunna let them vote what they want. Have you done any shots from that day at all? I havn't seen any films from you yet :/

  • Excellent video with great locations. The last one with the reflection is a belter.

  • Wow!

  • Lovely heart warming vid of a fantastic castle and crew.

(and camera man! - well done)

  • Great video, especially the first clip and as a general rule I only subscribe to quality video producers. Regards, John

  • Hi. Brilliant video as ever. I am in awe! But I have to say that Nunney Castle worked over the Royal Albert bridge in June 2010, double heading with KEI on Steam Dreams' "Cornish Riviera".

    Keep up the good work.

    John
