This steamer was constructed in Lorain, Ohio by the American Ship Building Company and launched on February 16, 1952. The Arthur M. Anderson was of the AAA class, and was one of eight built in the early 50's. The Anderson was built for the Pittsburg Steamship Company, of the United States Steel Corporation, as hull number 868. She was the second AAA vessel of three to be delivered to the fleet. The first being the Philip R. Clarke and the last boat delivered was the Cason J. Callaway. The Anderson's sea-trials commenced on August 7, 1952, and loaded her first cargo at the Two Harbors dock on August 12th. For more information see www.tv17.org.

  • this ship was the llast to have contact with the edmund fitzgerald

  • hope when they retire it they wont scrap it cause this freighter has history behind it. this was the 1 ship that stayed along and contact with the SS edmund fitzgearld when it sank. nice to see the anderson still in service in 2011 though.

  • Love this video!!

  • Great close up of Anderson's riveted hull plates. She survived the storm--even staying out in it to search for survivors. Riddled with cracked welds, Fitzgerald's welded hull failed. No wonder her sister ship Homer was scrapped.

  • @scotter420wigb ..This is not the sister ship too the Edmund Fitzgerald. the Big Fitz's sister ship was the Arthur B Homer and she was scrapped back in the late 80's.This ships history is that she trailed the Edmund Fitzgerald that night in 1975 and stayed out too look for survivors..

  • @roscoejohn .. Yes this is the Great Lakes vessel that sailed with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald that fateful night. The Anderson is still plying her trade even today in 2011..

  • I've seen the Arthur M. many times going up and down the St. Clair River. Saw the Edmund Fitzgerald several times there, too. This is great - really enjoyed the video. Thanks for the upload!

  • How does the sister ship Edmund Fitzgerald which was even a little bigger go down. I can't even imagine the power of the lake that nite.

  • Seen her in Winter Dry Dock in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. One Proud Ship.

  • Just saw her heading north through the Detroit River today through those crazy winds! Very eerie sight since this storm is supposedly stronger than the one it went through in '75.
