An Ontario Judge makes a civilized decision regarding sex work, and gives sex workers basic rights denied far too long. Is it perfect? No. Is anything ever "perfect". You tell me. =P Hopefully this will lead to more reform and better laws to protect the women (and men) who sell their time and services as free adults.
@winterstellar, I've seen the Swedish ombudsman dodging questions once or twice in the same vein (a Scandinavian way of not answering the question, or saying only "jaså" and pretending they had answered...
I live in the Netherlands, but I was born in Brazil. Good mix :-)
Funny, you'd imagine that a democracy would allow people to hold the government accountable for projects that aren't working. Can't the other parties make the soc fem look foolish over this issue?
@winterstellar (cont.) So maybe there will be some changes when younger people take over from those grumpy, old ladies? I hope so. And when it comes to "justifying" their opinions about anything...well, just today a parliament member from the opposition suggested that the parliament should stop a weekly practice they have of letting the opposition ask members of government questions about current matters, since the government members never answer questions anyway. They just dodge all questions..
@Asehpe Hehe, I automatically assumed that you were american or canadian. That was funny. Well, the socialist feminists of course say that the girls are victims of "trafficking", but only approx. two cases of trafficking/pimping has ever been detected and taken to court. That's out of thousands of ladies, so it's pretty obvious that it's not a big problem. I have no idea how they explain their hate against porn, prostitution and stuff.. But anyway, they have been opposed to it since the sixties.
@winterstellar, yes, you mean Geert Wilders' Partij van de Vrijheid (Party of Freedom) -- I'm in the Netherlands. Interesting how far left the scene is in Scandinavia. Here in Holland, things got a lot less left-wing after Pim Fortuyn's assassination.
Maybe prostitution in Scandinavia isn't that much of a big deal... but then again, if this is so, why did "the Swedish model" seem important enough to be approved? And how did they justify not listening to the prostitutes' associations?
@winterstellar But the right-wing party that did well in the swedish election now actually have a leader with roots in the neo-nazi skinhead scene. And none of the other parties in Sweden will even talk to them about anything. It's the same situation with our "right-wing"-party, nobody will include them in a government. Whilst in Denmark the populists have even been in government. The second largest party in Holland is also a right-wing populist party now,and apparently it has to do with muslims
@Asehpe I forgot to answer you, sorry about that. I guess it's not a matter that people are very concerned about, because there are so few people involved in that whole business probably. So I doubt that anybody will bother to mention it before the next election. But before the ban was made, polls showed that a majority of people were opposed to it. And Denmark has more right-wing populists than Norway, we only have one party and they're probably more like left-wing democrats in the US... : )
@winterstellar, and how much popular support do they get? Can they get real discussions going on, the kind that goes beyond the mere 'but they are all victims' talk? I'd imagine that Scandinavian countries would be willing to listen to and argue with such viewpoints. Isn't there a tradition of logical dialogue in your politics?
A right-wing populist party? Does such a thing exist in Scandinavia? (Oh wait -- there's Carl Bildt in Sweden...)
@Asehpe Concerning the election, I think the socialists will stay in power because the parties on the other side need to include a right-wing populist party to win. But the prostitutes' own organisation were and are strongly opposed to the ban. : )

Looking for clips of prostitutes tonight. Guess what video popped up in the search. I clicked on it before I realized it was yours!
