Here is some clips showing both the inside and outside of the Sutro Baths (burned down in 1966) and also the Cliff House. You will also notice the oddities scattered around the upstairs are now located at the MUSEE MECANIQUE on Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf (moved from the Cliffhouse in 2002). Some great glimpses of when the Sutro Baths were converted to Ice Skating and Roller Skating Rinks later on down the buildings history. Thanks to Anne for the clips! More info on the Museum:

  • @Scottgross To answer your concerns about the Tucker auto that was at the museum. Almost everything that was at Sutro was removed before it burned.

  • my grandpa used to always go swimming here as a teen and loved this place. he always talks about it! i wish i couldve seen it when it wasnt just ruins!

  • Cont.

My other favorite memories include the Tucker automobile (I hope it didn't go up in the fire) and General Tom Thumb's clothes from the P.T. Barnum collection.

I never got to swim or ice skate there as the museum always captivated my attention. When I got back from being in the Air Force, it had burned down. 40+ years later,

I still miss the place. I've been to a lot of places in the world and a lot of museums, but it was like no other. Sigh!

  • As I remember it...

Near the end as he is exiting, you can see a statue in a glass case at the bottom of the stairs. I think that was of a Japanese guy who made the statue of himself and then (supposedly) pulled every hair from his body and put it on the statue. I'll always remember that!

  • OMG! I learned to ice skate there in the late '50s. I still remember the binocular room and the taking bird rooms. I loved the place.

  • @jimmyd10100

    I can't wait to see. I'm performing a song that I've written about the mysterious ruins of the place . . . . .

  • This is the sort of stuff that would have gone into the long planned and as yet never realized San Francisco City Museum, had it (and that which was lost in 1906) not burned up in 1966.

  • WOW, wasn't expecting the great shots of the interior and ice rink.

  • Excellent! Glad you've put this clip up. I've a DVD copy of the movie, kind of hokey, but it caught scenes of the city that are definitely history, beginning to end, even the awful freeways. Thanks!!

  • everyone! we have put together the best documentary on sutro baths, coming out at the balboa theatre in san francisco around nov-2011. you do not want to miss this. if you grew up in s.f as I did-a must see. this film here is just how it was when I grew up. I lived right down on lower great hwy. rode those all mack buses in this picture . better times back then. different world. we had fun.
