  • The company was doing poorly, and the mill here was making pulp for newsprint. Newspapers are failing in North America, and thusly there is less need for newsprint pulp, so they shut 'er down.

    And of course, they didn't want someone ELSE making paper with the mill they owned, so they tore it all down.

    They also shut down another large paper mill in the province, shutting down the Grand Falls-windsor plant as well(and if they blow THAT one up, I'll be there to film it too!)

  • I can't believe they took it down,

  • Such a waste--when the U.S. pulled out of Harmon , Stephenville was left with a great infrastructure - buildings , airfield with a long runway , hospital , gym , excellent harbor , and a workforce second to none . It is hard to believe that some industry hasn't moved in and took advantage of the opportunities there . Are paper prices really so low that you can shut down a working mill and then destroy it to keep anyone from competing with you ?
