Shapers were at one time,a production machine,but mills are much faster at simple jobs,and a CNC Mill is great if you want to make a zillion identical parts.Shapers are quick to set up for the one off jobs typical in a home shop, where your payoff is a piece of well made unobtanium, and your main objective is not to make it as fast as possible.They also can cut internal keyways and splines which you can't on a mill.Price out a broach, to to cut the splines for your Rudge Ulster kickstart shaft!

@Southpointoh - Shapers are largely outmoded tools now, true, but there are still some applications they're good for.  Keyways, in particular. Still, knowledge of shapers and how they're used can help in understanding other machining operations
